Sunstone Montessori School

Sunstone Montessori School

Explore, engage, educate

Our story

Sunstone offers a comprehensive Montessori education for children age 2½ years old through 6th grade. Sunstone provides interactive environments in which hands-on exploration engages the mind; interactive environments where learning becomes a process of self-motivated curiosity and discovery; interactive environments where children cultivate a lifelong love of learning along with the higher-cognitive brain functions critical for advanced problem solving and lifetime success.

Sunstone Montessori approaches education from the premise that children develop themselves. We have observed that children thrive when they become the lead participant in their acquisition of knowledge. As educators, we are here to first provide a rich environment and second to guide each child through this environment along his or her unique path of discovery and self-development.

Children are grouped in mixed age classrooms and stay with the same teacher for three years before moving to the next level. We offer school day and extended care programs for children ages 2½ (able to toilet independently) to 6 at our Children's House campus in Multnomah Village, and for children in 1st through 6th grade at our Elementary campus at Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and Shattuck Road.

Educational programs

The underlying goal of Montessori education at every level is independence: functional, social, and intellectual. Maria Montessori believed that what children needed most of all was the skill set and ability to adapt peacefully to whatever life might bring.
