10% of our work is found on the shelves of the classroom. The other 90% is what makes that 10% possible. From its beginnings in the Children’s House, through maturation in the Elementary, the guides will present the other 90%; The Montessori Curriculum BEYOND the Shelves; the social and emotional life of a Montessori classroom.

Parent Education Series with Sarah Andrews

Come to our FREE parent education series presented by Sarah Andrews. This year Sarah offers three topics of interest:

January 19: 'Primary to Elementary'

6-8pm at The Lucky Lab - Dinner on us!

Sarah will take key materials from the classroom and demonstrate how the concrete, sensorial work in the Children's House makes direct connections with the abstract reasoning in the Elementary to build lasting skills in problem solving, memory, and task persistence.

Immediately following join current Elementary students and parents for a round-table Q&A.

February 23: 'The Dark Side of Rewards'

6-8pm at the Elementary Campus

Sarah Andrews reveals how we are actually punishing our children when we extrinsically motivate them with incentives, enticing goodies, verbal praise and other such rewards. Research has shown that rewards may produce desired results in the short term, but are ineffective in the long haul and in fact do lasting harm.

Punished by Rewards? A Conversation with Alfie Kohn Alfie Kohn is author of "Punished by Rewards; The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A's, Praise, and Other Bribes"

April 24: 'Choosing Wisely: Media and the Modern Family'

6-8pm at the Elementary Campus

Sarah Andrews is an AMI Primary Trainer and Oregon Registry Master Trainer, holds a M.Ed. in Education, a B.A. in Music Performance, and both Primary and Elementary-level AMI Montessori diplomas. Sarah currently contributes at Montessori Institute Northwest in classroom lectures, presentations, guiding practice sessions, as well as parent education, teacher development, and community education.
